With regard to production from the home mills, there was an over-estimate of production of between 5,000 and 6,000 tons on a total production of 560,000 tons. That is an error of about 1 per cent., but in so far as this over-estimate is concerned, it was corrected within a day or two before there was time for it to have affected the position about the maintenance of the seven-page newspapers. The plain fact is that, although pulp was available, the machines, in fact, were not. I do not think the newspapers would claim that they were surprised by the sudden reversion of periodicals to freedom, because, of course, that was announced some time before Christmas. The shortage of dollars is likely to continue for a long period and there is no prospect of immediate relief unless we can increase our home production or our imports from Sandinavia. In the O.E.E.C. Report this year the Government stated that the great improvement expected in Scandinavian supplies of paper-making woodpulp permits a substantial drop in the projected imports of this raw material from dollar sources.


A thermocompressor system is used to inject intermediate pressure steam into the dryer by using high pressure motive steam mixed with the low pressure blow-through steam. The pressure control of a section of dryers can be achieved by a pressure control instrument throttling the thermocompressor and the makeup steam. Thermocompressors when used on paper machine dryer sections, offer the advantages of machine flexibility and high production capabilities. Each separately controlled dryer section can be looked upon as a single paper machine that will operate within the design limits of the thermocompressor.


Perhaps the best known of Bowater's Paper Mills, at least from a railway perspective, were those in Sittingbourne and Kemsley. These possessed an extensive 2-foot 6-inch narrow gauge railway network, which linked them to Ridham Dock, the latter situated on the southern bank of The Swale. This operation, however, was not originally set-up by the Bowater Corporation; the company had come into ownership of the mills in 1936, after purchasing them from Edward Lloyd in a bid to boost newsprint output. The circulations of the largest US newspapers fell 14% in the year to March 2023, according to new figures shared with Press Gazette. The Evening Standard heavily cut its distribution from 800,000 to around 500,000.

Livesey works was retained as a separate concern, known as the Darwen Paper Staining, continued under the general management of Potters. 1864 was an important year for Potters with the acquisition of William Snape's Livesey print works. Whitehough Mill was producing the largest-sized paper in England and
supplying the London press with newsprint for 'newspapers of very great
dimensions'. Around 1827 the mill turned out a sheet of paper an acre in
extent - the largest single piece ever made up to that time. Whitehough
mill was extended several times and in 1840 employed about 100 hands. In
1869 it was brought by the Slacks, who had other paper making interests. Firstly, there is rain water that is essential for trees to grow and, through photosynthesis, transform carbon dioxide to oxygen and cellulose, which provides the industry’s primary raw material, wood fibre. Then there is water that is actually used to make pulp and paper, and finally, there is the suitably treated effluent.



Consequently, the UK’s modern newsprint mill run by Palm Paper in Norfolk, is to build its own sorting plant. This will take mixed papers from households, remove the newspapers for use in its own mill with the cardboard and some other papers going to cardboard mills or for use by its own mill. During Q123, Arctic Paper entered into a JV agreement with Rottneros, under the name Kostrzyn Packaging, with an initial share capital of PLN460k. The objective of this JV it to construct a moulded cellulose fibre packaging plant in Kostrzyn, planned to be operational by year end 2023; the finalised manufacturing moulded cellulose fibre packaging will be sold on to primary and secondary customers. The estimated value of this strategic investment is c PLN100m, and Arctic and Rottneros will each hold 50% of its share capital. Once finalised, production capacity is expected to reach c 80m moulded fibre trays annually, with revenue of c PLN60m at full capacity (2% of FY22 paper revenue).


There again, gone are the days of the hiring fairs at which employer and employee met. We would still be first if it were not for the dollar situation arising out of the war. Members opposite, I must tell them to face up to the responsibility of our dollar situation. It is no good saying that we ought to grant more dollars for newsprint unless they or some of them are willing to say what dollar imports should be cut, or at least make some suggestion, which we have never had from them, of how our dollar earnings can be increased. We have been considering very carefully the position of exports for next year. We are under strong pressure from Australia, South Africa, and from a number of other countries, and we have received representations on the very highest level from those countries that we should increase the level of exports above the present figure.

Its main purpose is to protect goods whilst in transit, storage and distribution. It prevents waste through breakage, spoilage and contamination, and extends product shelf life. A secondary purpose is to provide consumer information about the product and act as a means of brand differentiation. As a result of efficient packaging, product damage in transit remains below 5% in the developed world. You may see a number of layers of packaging around a product and think of it as excessive. However, each layer has a function with specific properties to help protect its contents from damage.


This is likely related to the fact that in addition to the more expensive long-fibre NBSK pulp (c 59% FY22 revenue) that the company sells, it also produces and sells cheaper groundwood pulp (c 11%), used to produce inexpensive, non-durable newsprint paper stock. Its paper mills also produce CTMP pulp (c 22%), a cheaper alternative to NBSK. The core materials used to produce paper in the mills are pulp, chemical fillers (primarily calcium carbonate), starch (extracted from maize, potatoes and tapioca) and optical bleaching agents. Unlike some other companies that use their own pulp produced in in-house mills, Arctic Paper is non-technically integrated, acquiring all of its pulp externally on a revolving annual contractual basis, concluded under framework agreements or one-off transactions. This is mainly due to the fact that the pulp produced in its pulp mills is of a differing quality to that required to produce its specific grades of paper.


The transaction does not affect the Packaging Solutions division's formed fiber and biocomposite operations located at the Hylte site. The Hylte site transaction, along with the discontinuation of the Anjala divestment, concludes Stora Enso's plan announced in March 2022 to divest four of Stora Enso's five paper production sites. A thermocompressor can be a useful tool if the correct information is provided for its design. An incorrectly designed unit can be very wasteful of high pressure motive steam, and also suction steam (blowthrough) if it cannot be recirculated. Of the timber extracted in the UK, less than 5% is used in paper and pulp production2 (around 11% worldwide1).


In any case, we are to get only 75,000 tons from Canada next year; that is the maximum quantity we can ask for in view of the cut in the contracts made this year. The contracts have what we call an escalator clause, which limits the increase in any one year to 50,000 tons above what was ordered in the year before. However, we are thankful for what has been done, and we hope that this points the way to a return to continuity and permanence under these long-term contracts with Canada.


In other cases it deteriorates or disintegrates as in sanitary paper and cigarette paper, and others which quite literally go down the pan! Also some papers end up in products that are unsuitable for recycling. Altogether, Shotton produces 500,000 tonnes of newsprint in this way, of which 50% is sold within 70km of the mill.
