Window Sash Repairs

Window sashes need to be checked regularly for mold, mildew and other damage. If you catch these issues early you can save money on future repairs.

The sash is an interior frame that moves upwards and downwards in windows that open. This article will show you how to perform simple repairs to sash.

Weather Stripping

Wood window sashes give a classic aesthetic to your home. When properly maintained, they will last for years. They may, however, be damaged or degraded over time, due to exposure and normal wear and tear. Thankfully, sash repair experts can restore your windows back to their original condition and keep them looking fantastic for longer than replacement windows.

The first step for repair sash windows is to address weather stripping, which is found on both the sash as well as the frame. It can cause drafts if worn or loose. To fix it, begin by determining the brand of your window and glass manufacturer date (etched in the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacer between panes). Take the sash off, and mark its size and width so that you can find a replacement weather stripping that matches.

Then, remove the sash and place it on a table so you can access all four sides. Sash Weights

Sash Cords

Most old double-hung windows have a cord or chain attached to the weights that helps keep the sashes level in the jamb. As time passes, these cords may become damaged and render it impossible to raise the windows. A new sash cable will restore the ability to raise and lower the sash and keep it in position when it is opened.

The first step in replacing sash cords is to locate and take out the access panels located in the jambs. These are usually fixed or screwed in and must be removed or moved. You might be able to employ a hammer and chisel for removing them, but it's always better to lay down dust sheets before commencing any work.

Once the access panel is removed, you can begin working on the sash. Make the small parting beads (also known as "tie rails") out of their grooves with a chisel or flat bar.
