The Kovea Hydra multi fuel stove first came on the market in 2010 and has been a favorite choice for many backpackers ever since. It isn't as popular UK backpackers pay the stove much attention these days maybe because they've gotten caught up with better known brands or whatever the latest lightweight offering out of China or Korea is but it doesn't mean the Hydra isn't still a great stove with its merits.

It's a compact and light stove, burning all liquid fuels including white gas as well as propane butane through a single nozzle. It's a typical stove design, with the burner bell that is bolted to a body that anchors three support legs that fold out. The pump is on top of the fuel line, and the generator loop wraps around the inlet and the flame spreader is situated just above. The burner is a slow-moving flame type. The instructions for the Hydra are written in English but they were not written by native English speakers. The instructions caution you against using certain types of lighter fluid. If you don't follow the instructions correctly this could cause an accident and land Kovea in legal trouble. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas container from a reputable brand will work perfectly.

Primus OmniLite Ti

The Primus Omnilite Ti is a ideal choice for those looking for a multifuel stove that can cook using a variety fuels. It can be used with petrol/gasoline, gas, or diesel, kerosene, and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each fuel type and also allows to alter the size of the flame which is a wonderful feature. This stove also has a fuel line that lies flat on the ground and can be easily connected to the tank.

While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it does require maintenance in order to keep it working correctly. It could be dangerous as it explodes when you are priming. This is a problem that is common to all stoves with liquid fuel that use a second spindle on the stove end instead of an actual coil to vaporize the fuel.

Another issue is that it requires different jets for multifuel stove each kind of fuel. This means that if you're cooking on kerosene the jet hole must be smaller than when using gas. This is a minor nuisance but it's still worth mentioning.

MSR Whisper Light

The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the tiniest, lightest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also very easy to repair in the field. It is able to run on canister liquid gas or fuel and includes attachments for both. The new model is 10percent lighter than its predecessor and the burner system has been redesigned to improve heat distribution. It's ideal for novices or budget-minded backpackers.

The whistler Lite takes a little time to prepare to prime and boil water, but it is an efficient stove that will not fail you. The flame is powerful and can cook a liter of water within two minutes. The only drawback is that it's not as good for simmering as some other stoves.

MSR created the Dragonfly to be a more capable burner. It's a similar design to the whistler but is smaller and has superior performance. It's not as inexpensive as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus stove and cookset is a fantastic alternative that offers the same configuration for a fraction of the cost. You can also get a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane canisters as well. Both versions have the same basic design however the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.

Coleman Sportster II

It's a simple and basic Coleman stove that can do the job. It's compact, self-contained and solid, with the tank at the bottom and the burner on the top. This makes it simple to use and an excellent option for backpackers, beginners who want to reduce weight, and for those of us who prefer to have one or two spares in the van.

This stove is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha which is also referred to as "white gas") however it can be used with non-leaded gas as well. A gallon of gasoline can last as long as a typical Coleman liquid fuel cylinder so you'll save money on fuel with this alternative.

It takes some practice to get a good blue flame on a stove that burns liquid fuel. You'll have to pressurize the stove and prime them correctly before you can start. If you don't do it correctly the fuel could pool, spray outside the burner, or even sputter. To master this do some practice outside before you go on your trip.

The stove may lose some performance and flame odor efficiency if you use non-Coleman fuels, but this is a tradeoff for its versatility. Make sure you purchase gas that is not leaded and not that's enhanced with alcohol or Methanol. That's because these types of fuels can cause the unit to degrade, leak, sputter and may even explode!

The newer models of these stoves are known as 'hybrid', or 'compressed fuel multifuel stoves' and there are various names for them such as isobutane canister fuel white gas, kerosene, and unleaded car gasoline/petrol.

Another option is to buy a multifuel stove kit that can convert your regular Trangia burner into a multifuel cooker. They are typically available at camping stores that specialize in camping and are also available for purchase internationally. They're a great choice for Trangia enthusiasts and are capable of burning all liquid fuels except diesel. If used with the correct accessories can even simmer.
