Replacement Upvc Window Handles

The majority of replacement window glass replacement handles made of upvc include everything you require to complete the task. However, if the old handle had screws or pins holding it, these must be removed. Then, remove the'snap-in' cover on the base of the handle.

The next step is to determine the type of window lock and handle you want to replace. This is vital!

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock that is used to secure casement windows such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. The handle is fitted with a 7mm square shaft that is fitted into an internal gearbox that is mounted on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned it triggers a series of locks around the window's perimeter. Espag handles are also known as shootbolt handles and provide additional security when compared to the conventional single point lock that is used on older window frames.

They are available in a variety of different options such as inline and cranked handles that can be used in left or right-hand operation. There is also a range of sleek ergonomically designed handles that are made to enhance both the feel of the handle and the way it looks on your windows.

You will need to measure the spindle size from the base of your uPVC handle if you want to purchase the correct replacement. This measurement, known as the step height will help you select the perfect uPVC window handle for your home.

If you require to remove any screws that secure the handle, you can use a screwdriver or pliers. After this is done, you will need to remove the handle from the frame by removing the screw or pins that hold the spindle before pulling away from the window.

Once the handle is removed, you will then be capable of accessing the locking mechanism inside the frame of the window and remove the wedge block for cockspur which is placed next to the handle, allowing the window to open. The new uPVC handles you purchased should be able slide over the cockspur block, and then into the handle spindle, allowing the window to open again. If you want to be sure that your uPVC handles are properly secured you should replace the cockspur block with the brand new block.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle is closed and rotates onto a wedge-shaped plastic receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches, which are also covered in this section.) These handles can be lockable or nonlockable. They are available in a variety of nose heights that can be adapted to the existing frame.

The handle is secured by a small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. They are usually one-way handles however a deadlock lock cylinder that locks is a possibility to add security.

As with Espag handles cockspur handle replacements are simple to put in place all you need is new screws (supplied) and the correct backset. The backset is the distance from the baseplate of the window to the underside of the handle's nose. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, while UPVC is 21mm wide. There are a variety of other options though so it is important to take a measurement before purchasing the handle (see video below for how).

This kind of window handle can be replaced by simply removing the existing handle and removing the spindle, or in certain instances, the entire handle assembly. The replacement handle can then be secured with two pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screws can be purchased in a brass or zinc finish to match the hardware and there is also the option of a self-locking version.

It is a simple to install replacement for the cockspur handle that is perfect for fixing or replacing old uPVC windows, they have a universal design which makes them suitable for most profiles and backsets. Each handle is equipped with three packers, each with a different thickness. These are neatly installed on the underside of handles and can be stacked to achieve backsets as small as 9mm or as big as 21mm. These handles are available in left and right-handed models, as well as lockable and nonlockable versions. They also come with a variety of nose heights.

Tilt and Turn

Tilt and turn windows are a popular European window style that has been around for decades in Europe, but is only getting noticed stateside. They combine the functionality of three window types into one - tilt, pivot and in-swing. This makes them perfect for older homes since they can be used to provide more ventilation than traditional window types.

When closed tilt and turn windows lock as windows that are fixed in normal fashion. By turning the handle either 90° or 180° depending on the tilt-and-turn type of window the sash opens inwards, and the window will turn inward to allow air circulation. This is a great solution for ventilation without the need to open a large window which can be a safety risk if not properly secured when opening.

The sash is also able to be fully opened by turning the handle 90or 180@. This allows for full air circulation, which is particularly useful in draughty rooms or homes where smoke or other odors are likely to accumulate. It also makes cleaning the exterior of the glass much easier because it can be done from inside the house which usually requires ladders that are a bit shaky.

Tilt-and turn windows are also secure. When locked in the closed position they are difficult to open from the outside, and they come with double glazed window replacement seals that prevent rainwater from getting into the home when in the tilted or in-swing position. This is a useful feature for older homes, where burglars are more likely to target traditional windows that are opened from the side hinges.

Spade

There are many kinds of window handles that can be fitted to double glazed windows made of Upvc. The two most popular kinds are Espag handles and Cockspur handles. There's also tilt and turn handles blade or spade handles and monkey tail handles. The type of handle that you select will depend on your preferences and the type of windows you have.

To select the correct replacement for your window handle, you have to know how the existing handle is fixed to the frame. This is known as handing and it is an important piece of information to know when buying online. Certain handle styles are not suitable for replaced all windows. For instance, certain handles are angled whilst others are straight and turn left or right. You'll also need the spindle's size, which is the distance between the base of the handle and the head of the handle.

Identifying if your windows require a restrictor is also important when choosing the appropriate handle. These are typically found in high rise flats or commercial properties, replaced but they're not required for most domestic homes. Lastly, you should also think about step height, which is the distance from the top of the screw plate to the apex of the handle.

Spade is the word from Old English spadu or spaedu and has been translated in various languages, including German spaten and Low German Spathen. In the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s in New York City the word spade was used to denigrate black people. Spade has since risen to prominence in pop culture and is a widely-respected symbol of African American heritage and pride.
