What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Tools

Having the right tools at hand is crucial when working out in the field. This kit is designed with that in mind and includes all the basic hand tools needed for repairing things in the field. The tools are made from metal with the least amount of plastic so that they can withstand use. The kit comes complete with the coalcracker tool, a canvas zippered pouch and includes awl, reamer, twist awl, cutting shears, the gimlet (5MM) wooden spool of sinue, a bottle of coalcracker oil and a set illustrated instructions.

Repair Patches

Think about adding adhesive patches to your kit if there are several holes in your equipment. These heavy-duty patches have a high-performance glue that is applied to a durable polyurethane back that allows a tear under pressure to recover. These patches are available in clear or colored versions and ensure durability against punctures as well as moisture, sunlight, saltwater and temperature extremes.

If your kit doesn't include any of the above items it is possible to consider adding a water-proof Aquaseal wader sealant. This water-tight glue will bond to plastics, fabric, metals and other materials for an enduring fix. This is great for Rep kit repairing drysuits, and is also used in the field. It can take up to 12 hours for it to cure before you can use the repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric kit for packs, tents and rainwear made of silicone-impregnated polyester. It includes one Clean Tape patch and a sil nylon repair swatch along with a 1/4-ounce tube of Goretex Sil-Fix repair adhesive and sealant, as well as a brush. Apply patch to clean smooth, smooth surface. There should be a minimum of 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper from patch surface and rub it with moderate pressure (adhesive side down).

Surface preparation is crucial for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone, or Rep Kit oils on shoes and boots can cause adhesion issues. For the best results, use Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing up to 2 hours.

Adhesive patches

If you're on the trail and aren't able to do a full vulcanising repair the patches that are self-adhesive will allow you to get back in the saddle quickly and without waiting. Simply roughen the tube with the included scraper, then apply one of the self-adhesive patches to roll on.

Clean the punctured area thoroughly Then apply the tube-scuffer, or sandpaper to roughen the surface, which helps glue stick. Then spread a thin coating of glue on the patch, covering an area at least as big as the patch itself. Take a few moments for the glue to dry before pressing the patch into place and holding it securely in the desired position.

This kit contains two adhesive-backed clear Tenacious Tape pressure sensitive fabric patch for repair and a 1/4 ounce tube of Seam Grip urethane repair adhesive & sealant. It is ideal for reinforcing damaged sleeping bags, rainwear, and packs.
